The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Educational Leadership Development Program began this year with 19 fellows, half of them officers and education officers and the other half commanders from the various corps who, as part of their duties, are involved in education and the training of soldiers.
The program is designed to help the fellows mold their educational identity. The goal is to develop the reflexive aspect of their work in the field with the assumption that an awareness of basic assumptions and the actions which derive from them will lead to more meaningful choices and, as a result, improved performance.
The program focuses on the following areas: education (educational philosophy, practices of education, education in Israel today), Judaism, Zionism, and Israeli society.
The program deals with these topics through a wide range of pedagogies – from frontal lectures by top experts to reading assignments, guided reading in small groups, tours of educational institutions, individual guidance and group discussions.
At the Mandel Graduation Ceremony, conducted on June 2011, The IDF Chief Education Officer, Brig. Gen. Eli Sherameister, addressed Mr. Morton Mandel about the future activities of the Mandel Foundation in Israel: “I hope that we will continue our ongoing activities to educate Israel’s future leaders.” He added that in order to keep developing the Zionist enterprise, much effort must be invested in education, primarily of teenagers.
